TYPEFACES: SODAR & MONYLOP
ARTIST EDITION ROLLING PAPERS
BERLIN, GERMANY
2024 – Present
D. G. M, based in Amsterdam, the epicentre of European cannabis consumption, typographically interprets the rolling-paper company Papes, co-founded in 2024 with Peter Knirsch.
Typesetting the visual identity foundations for the art magazine, based in Berlin, came innately. The Sodar typeface was launched just one month prior to the commission, intuitive to becoming first choice for representing the characteristics of fine, long-slim papers, or rather, Papes.

The Papes logo was first to ignite the format, appointed for each of the three booklet etiquettes. All else followed suit, the animated webfount variation and moving visuals for the company, assigned to the characteristics of fine papers and the motion of withdrawing a pape from the dispenser and preparing a rolled cigarette.
Made in Europe, the production of the rolling-papers are of Spanish excellence, as is the close relationship with the printer. The deluxe booklet with magnetic enclosures contains one hundred fine, long-slim papers as well as a designated compartment for seventeen purple active charcoal filters in collaboration with the German company Purize®. Three sizes are available, Full-Length Active, Full-Length Slim and Double Regular. Surprisingly, each product remains within the mainstream competitive price range.
For each issue, three unique artists are commissioned to submit an assigned artwork for the booklets resulting in a collectors item, artists edition smoking paraphernalia.

The webshop, also by D. G. M, exhales the visual representations of smoking ease and psychedelics. It remains clear and practical for a light minded audience whilst entertaining the senses of cognition, with animations and swift graphic inversion. The Monylop typeface sets the body-text clearly, a legible monospaced optical arrangement, whilst the Sodar typeface logo displays a smokey, animated variable antithesis.
